By the time you are reading this Christmas will be over but celebrating Jesus should never stop. In light of that, I want to tell you about the last Sunday morning lesson we did down in the student ministry in 2024. I took a different approach when talking about the birth of Jesus. Typically we only talk about the birth side of his story and that makes sense. To make it different we read John 14:22-31. This is the passage where Jesus reminds his disciples that He is leaving. In this passage he tells them of the Holy Spirit who will be taking his place.

You may be asking why would we talk about Jesus leaving and the Holy Spirit coming during Christmas? Great question! I wanted to remind our students about why Jesus came in the first place. Jesus didn’t come to just be born and we celebrate his birth by giving gifts. No, Jesus came to live a sinless life becoming the sacrifice we needed.

Reading a passage where Jesus is predicting his coming death and the coming of the Holy Spirit helps take the celebration of his birth to a new level. We often get caught up in the birth story and forget the rest of this life. The life that we could not live, the sacrifice we don’t deserve yet we get.

Christmas day may be over but there is always time to reflect and be reminded of why Jesus came. He came to save us from our sin. His birth means so much more than just a day to celebrate.
