Over the last couple of weeks we have been walking through Tracing The Thread. This is our youth sermon series we have been teaching throughout this last semester. This week I want to talk about a lesson we did a few weeks ago. On Wednesday we read through Exodus 3:11-15 then on Sunday we read Romans 6:1-14. If you remember, the point of this series is to take a New Testament passage and see how it ties back to the Old Testament passage. I encourage you to read these two passages for yourself and see if you can see a connection.

In the Exodus passage you have a conversation between God and Moses. Here God is telling him to meet with Pharaoh in order to have the Irealites freed from captivity. Moses is worried that the Israelites won't follow him. He asks God, "Who do I tell them sent me?" God replies in the best way possible, tell them “I AM sent me to you.” The God of their ancestors, the one who will protect them sent you.

In this passage we see God telling Moses but also telling us who He is. He is the one who made all things. He is the one in control. He is the one we should follow. If you continue in the story God helps Moses set free the Israelites and if you follow their story you know they don’t always follow him.

This is where our next passage comes into light. In Romans 6 we have a passage here asking a question from the start about sin. Should we continue sinning so grace may multiply? The answer is no, but not because grace has an ending or could run out. No it’s because Jesus gave his life and when we choose to follow him we are to make a life change. Sin should be something we don’t want to do anymore. We are called to walk in the newness of life, not stuck in our old ways.

Now how does this passage about not continuing to live in sin tie back to God telling Moses who he is? I’m glad you asked. The same God who sent Moses, the I Am, is the same God who sent Jesus so we could be made righteous and be forgiven of our sins. Where we don’t have to walk around in shame because of what we have done. That when we go out and share the Gospel we know that the I AM sent us and he is on our side.
