Last week I talked about the new curriculum we are doing in the student ministry. We are taking an Old Testament passage on Wednesday night and then looking at a New Testament passage on Sundays. We then see how these passages tie together. This week we are reading Psalm 23 and John 10:1-21.
Psalm 23 is a passage most of us have read; you may even have it memorized. This is a passage where David is calling out to God and giving Him praise. You may remember a bit of David's life and the ups and downs, but he always finds his way back to God. From an early age, David was anointed to become the next king. From that time on David had a choice. He could continue to follow the God of his ancestors and the one who was calling him to be king or he could follow in the footsteps of King Saul who chose to dishonor God.
This passage in Psalms gives a great look at David's choice. He chose to continue following God even with his mistakes. David calls God his shepherd. Why is that important? If you remember, David was a shepherd when he was young. David understands the dependency sheep have for their shepherd. David knew he needed God just like the sheep needed him.
In John 10 Jesus is calling himself the Good Shepherd. He is the only one who is worthy to carry this title. Jesus is the only one who could lay down His life for us. Just as a shepherd would risk his life to save his sheep. Jesus gave His life for us, his sheep. David saw the need for God and for Him to be his shepherd. Do you see the need for Jesus to be your shepherd? If you do, then you should know there are others who need a shepherd.
My encouragement to you is to remember your need for Jesus. There are people out there who are looking to a million other things for guidance. You have the answer, you have the Good Shepherd. Tell them about Him.
