In his sermon on Sunday morning, Pastor Jay referenced a question some people ask: “Which is more important? Christmas or Easter?” The question is really not a good question because the two holidays are tied together! Jesus came at Christmas so that we could have Easter.  Without Christmas there would be no Easter.  Without Easter, Christmas wouldn’t matter.

Jesus came at Christmas, born that tiny baby, so that he could grow up and die on a cross for our sins. It is a shocking thing to think about, but true.  This fact about Christmas can, and should, change our lives! As we enter this Christmas season, let’s not get so caught up in the lights, presents, glitter, programs, and hecticness that we forget the reason for the season: Jesus!

Now don’t get me wrong, I am not suggesting you turn Christmas into a somber time with no fun! In fact, as one whose job is to work with children and families, I absolutely encourage a lot of fun! Take time to look for ways to talk with your children about how Jesus can change us at Christmas. Schedule in some intentional family times and look for Jesus in the things you do together. Here is just one example:

I love the movie A Christmas Carol. I watch several versions of it every year. One form that is good for all ages is A Muppet Christmas Carol. Plan a family movie night and sit down with your children or grandchildren to watch the Muppets sing and dance their way through their rendition of this old story. Then talk about it. This story teaches us about the importance of change. Anyone can change. But who is it that brings real change into our lives? It is Jesus! In fact, Jesus is why we celebrate Christmas. So, this year, at Christmas, let’s celebrate Jesus’ birth and honor him by giving our lives to him, changing each day to become more like him. Such a simple and fun way to celebrate the season, while pointing our families to Jesus, the author of life.
